Why Is There Oil Under My Car?
Seeing oil under your car can be stressful. A small spot may look harmless, but an oil leak can become serious if the engine loses too much oil or the leak reaches hot engine parts.
Oil helps lubricate and protect the engine. When oil level drops too low, the engine may overheat, wear faster, or suffer major damage.
If you notice oil spots, a burning smell, smoke, or an oil warning light, schedule an inspection as soon as possible.
Common Causes of Oil Leaks
Valve Cover Gasket Leak
The valve cover sits near the top of the engine. Its gasket helps keep oil sealed inside.
When the gasket wears out, oil may leak down the side of the engine. You may notice a burning oil smell if oil reaches hot exhaust parts.
Oil Pan Gasket Leak
The oil pan is located under the engine. If the gasket is worn or damaged, oil may drip from the bottom of the vehicle.
This type of leak can become worse over time and should be inspected before the oil level drops too low.
Drain Plug or Oil Filter Leak
Sometimes oil leaks happen after an oil change.
A loose drain plug, damaged washer, old seal, or improperly installed oil filter can cause dripping under the vehicle.
If you notice leaking soon after service, have it checked quickly.
Front or Rear Main Seal Leak
Main seals help keep oil inside the engine where the crankshaft exits the engine block.
These leaks can be more involved to repair because of their location.
Oil Cooler or Hose Leak
Some vehicles use oil coolers or oil lines. A damaged hose, seal, or cooler can leak oil and may require replacement.
What Does an Oil Leak Look Like?
Engine oil is usually brown, amber, or black depending on age.
A fresh leak may look light brown. Older oil may look dark or dirty.
Oil usually feels slippery and may leave a stain on the ground.
Other fluids can also leak from a vehicle, including coolant, transmission fluid, brake fluid, power steering fluid, or water from the AC system. A technician can help identify the fluid and source of the leak.
Is It Safe to Drive With an Oil Leak?
It depends on how severe the leak is.
A small leak may allow short driving, but it should still be inspected.
Stop driving and seek help if:
-
The oil pressure light turns on
-
Oil is leaking heavily
-
You smell burning oil
-
Smoke comes from the engine bay
-
Engine noise increases
-
Oil level is very low
-
The vehicle feels unsafe
Driving with low oil can damage the engine quickly.
Why Diagnostics Matter
Oil can travel across engine parts before dripping onto the ground. That means the visible drip location may not be the actual source.
A proper inspection may include:
-
Checking oil level
-
Inspecting gaskets and seals
-
Looking under the vehicle
-
Cleaning and tracing the leak
-
Using UV dye if needed
-
Checking the oil filter and drain plug
-
Inspecting engine surfaces and hoses
Finding the real source helps avoid replacing the wrong part.
